This year has been a busy one for our Club and I would say, fun as well.
Early this spring of 2014, we decided that the exterior of the Clubhouse was beyond paint, so something serious had to be done. New siding seemed to be the best solution, which is the direction we took. Over the course of the summer, green siding was installed by a number of volunteers. Under Scott DeMille's guidance, the old, rotten wood was removed and a brand new vinyl exterior was installed. Everyone agrees it looks 1000% better. Our next step is a bit of trim paint and perhaps a bit of gardening which will give us a Clubhouse that we can be truly proud of.
Our monthly Fly-In Breakfasts continued throughout the year and, for the most part, the weather cooperated. Our September breakfast provided a bit of a challenge due to cold conditions in the hangar, and Hydro One which threw us a curve by shutting off the power on Sunday morning. Did we do something to upset them? I blame Jeff since he is in charge over there! In any case it was bright and sunny, and with our usual innovative spirit, we made the best of it and had a great time.
The Canada Day celebration and Labour Day corn roast were other highlights of 2014, both made extra enjoyable by the fabulous food prepared by our talented members. It never ceases to amaze me. It was also a banner year for corn in The County and I have never tasted better anywhere.
We entertained the Air Cadets in July and from what we heard, it’s one of the highlights of their summer. Hotdogs and pop? Go figure. We always have tons of fun doing it and our members get a real charge out of seeing the enthusiasm of the young people, many of whom are girls. The lovely plaque presented to us by their Commanding Officer Rob Burns was a nice touch.
In August, COPA for Kids was on the calendar and the weather cooperated. Eight local pilots flew about 40 local kids, while Loch Sloy fed everyone. Here was yet another example of how things can be successful and much more fun when everyone helps. Having said that, we really did miss Sandra and Glen, our COPA for Kids experts. They were off traveling the world.
Ongoing projects for 2015... runway lights, paint, hangar repairs, Clubhouse redecoration, and electrical updating. We look forward to the help of our members for as we all know, many hands will once again make light work.
